  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Beth Kurland, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist -- Not your typical parenting book! : A must -read book for any parent, caregiver or teacher wanting to make an impact on the children in their lives. While I remember when my kids were younger so many parents would say to me “too bad kids don’t come with a manual”, this book is about the closest thing one could hope for. Dr. Abblett provides guidance and wisdom for how to connect with children to help them feel seen and heard. This simple and powerful (yet not always so easy to implement skill) can have a profound impact on children’s behaviors, emotions, and the way they view themselves, and Dr. Abblett teaches in clear, practical and engaging ways how to do this through what he calls prizing. His personal stories and authentic voice make the book captivating and relatable, and his specific examples and journal style prompts and exercises provide hands on learning of what he is trying to teach. Combining science, mindfulness skills and storytelling, Mitch weaves together a guide for how we, as adults, can learn to become more mindful, skillful, compassionate and present in the lives of those we care most about. While he brings with him a wealth of knowledge and clinical skills from his extensive work with kids and families, his honesty and down to earth tone remind us that he is right here with us, and that we are all human. What Dr. Abblett ultimately offers in this book is both a paradigm shift and a toolkit — one that can be put immediately into practice. Anyone who reads this book will walk away with a clear idea of what it means to be truly present in a child’s life and will have step by step guidance for cultivating this gift of presence and forming deep and meaningful connections with the children in their lives. This book has the potential to change lives and have a lasting impact for decades to come. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carol S -- Compassionate connecting to children : Dr. Mitch Abblett, in his book Prizeworthy, has masterfully explained the difference between merely praising and the far better response of prizing a child thereby enriching the lives of children by unlocking possibilities that otherwise might remain unknown. I highly recommend this book to parents, grandparents, teachers, and anyone else who deals with children. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kelsey -- Learn to really cherish your children in a very impactful way : To prize is to value something highly, and every child is prizeworthy. It's easy to notice the positive and the good, and it's hard, as a parent, or teacher, or even therapist, to always value what's going on in your child or teen. That child's emotional outburst in the moment, or risk-taking behaviors, or even getting into trouble in school is an opportunity for you to stop, connect, and prize them and their potential, even in the difficult moments. As parents, it's so easy to get caught in the cycle of trying to control your child. With Prizeworthy, you learn how to take a step back, notice, and mindfully connect, helping them really reach their potential by being that grounding, calm, and loving presence. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joseph Dantuono -- A book that needed to be written : Among other things, Prizeworthy is a paean to parents and professionals seeking a way to see past unwanted or “bad” behavior and allows them to cultivate a relationship that fosters a deeper, lasting and healing level of connection. Prizeworthy offers a guide that encapsulates how caregivers can unlock their ability to show children that they see that they’re suffering, that they know what the child needs in that moment and that their wellbeing matters to them. It’s a powerful, honest but not forced guide and is an absolute gem. - Joseph D’Antuono, Esq. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Becky Baddeley -- A Refreshing New Approach!! : As a Mom of 4, I'm always looking for ways to improve my relationship with my children. Dr. Abblett has written a very good book outlining the ways you can use "prizing" in your parenting approach. I appreciate his approach to writing so a parent can understand the "lingo". A lot of books on parenting methods are hard to decipher. Dr. Abblett did well on his writing and I look forward to having this on my shelf for future reference. Well done.
